Wonder Man Episode 4 introduces a bizarre and obscure Avengers hero from the comics, and weaved them into Simon Williams’ (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) story seamlessly.
Instead of being a straight crime-fighting story it follows Williams, a struggling actor in Hollywood as he tries to land the lead role in a “Wonder Man” movie. He gets help from none other than Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) who impersonated the Mandarin back in Iron Man 3 and later appeared in Shang-Chi.
Unfortunately for Williams, Slattery isn’t helping him out of the goodness of his heart. He’s been tasked by the Department of Damage Control with getting evidence that Williams actually has superpowers. While Dexerto’s review wasn’t as hot on the show feeling like an “underwhelming pre-credits sequence,” it is refreshing to see Marvel try something different with its Hollywood satire.
Wonder Man does have plenty of Easter eggs in store for fans too, including the introduction of Doorman, a character from a little-known Avengers team.
Who is Doorman in the Marvel Comics?
Marvel ComicsIn the comics, Doorman is a mutant whose real name is DeMarr Davis, and he has the ability to use his own body as a door to the Darkforce Dimension. This lets him teleport people and objects through portals, while also being able to summon that energy to create constructs he can use in a fight.
Both he and the Great Lakes Avengers first appeared in West Coast Avengers #46 back in 1989. The team was assembled when a hero called Mr. Immortal advertises in a newspaper that he’s starting his own superhero group in Milwuakee, Wisconsin. Essentially, the team are C-list heroes who often wind up causing more trouble than good, but they mean well.
Their dynamic works particularly well in the 2016 Great Lakes Avengers series by Zac Gorman and Will Robson. Coincidentally, Doorman’s teammate Mr. Immortal briefly appeared in the She-Hulk TV series, where he was being sued by a number of former wives who he ghosted after “dying” and starting a new life under a new name.
MCU Doorman is why superheroes are banned in Hollywood
Disney+In the MCU, Doorman is the reason why Hollywood has banned superheroes from working on film and TV sets. Instead of being a mutant in the MCU, DeMarr Davis (Byron Bowers) got his powers when he touched some black sludge from a Roxxon dumpster.
He woke up in a bizarre space filled with doors (which comics fans know as the Darkforce Dimension) and Davis realizes he’s gained an extra-dimensional ability.
He later uses it to save people when a fire breaks out at the club he works at, as they all step through one of his doors to escape. A-list star Josh Gad was one of the people saved by Davis, and the pair start working together on a heist film called “Cash Grab” with Doorman’s powers as the film’s gimmick.
But the fame ends up causing Davis more trouble than he expected, as he’s ridiculed for his “Ding, dong!” catchphrase, and he starts drinking. He’s hungover while filming with Gad, and feels sick when his costar jumps through his body, accidentally sending him into the Darkforce Dimension forever.
This leads Hollywood to rely on the “Doorman Clause” which bans any superheroes from working in the industry. Luckily, the Wonder Man showrunner revealed Gad’s fate when speaking to Dexerto.
