Split Fiction game director gives exciting update about Sydney Sweeney movie

Split Fiction game director has Josef Fares has given a brief progress report on the forthcoming movie adaptation that’s set to star Sydney Sweeney.

Thanks to a compelling story and creative two-person gameplay, Split Fiction was a hit with critics and gamers alike in 2025, selling more than four million copies in the process.

That story revolves around two authors – fantasy writer Zoe and sci-fi scribe Mio – who test out a simulation that thrusts them into their own fictional worlds.

A film adaptation was announced just two weeks after release, and thanks to a new interview, it sounds like progress is being made on the project.

Following an intense bidding war, Amazon MGM Studios won the rights to produce a Split Fiction movie, with Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu set to direct, and Sydney Sweeney starring.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick – whose previous credits include the Zombieland and Deadpool movies – were charged with the task of adapting the material, and according to game director Josef Fares, they’ve now completed their first draft.

Speaking at the Guldbagge Awards, and as per the Moviezine Instagram, Fares said: “I got the first version of the script today but you know, there’s so much talk in Hollywood. I usually say it like this ‘I believe it when I see it.'”

Feres also revealed that he’s spoken to the movie’s prospective star Sydney Sweeney, saying “I’ve had a meeting with her and she seems super chill,” and adding that the actress is “hyped” for the movie.

But Sweeney is also one of Hollywood’s hottest properties right now, and with multiple projects in development – including the forthcoming Gundam movie – an actual start date might depend on when she gets time in her schedule.
