Black Ops 7 is bringing back fan-favorite mode missing since BO4

Treyarch has confirmed that a fan-favorite game mode is returning in Black Ops 7 Season 2 for the first time since 2018.

The Season 2 update is set to be another big content drop for Black Ops 7. Not only will it bring the usual new guns and maps, but it also marks the arrival of Ranked Play, alongside changes to Endgame.

On top of all that, the devs have officially confirmed that Safeguard mode is making a long-awaited comeback in multiplayer.

Safeguard returns in Black Ops 7 Season 2

For those who don’t know, Safeguard is an objective-based mode where the attacking team escorts a robot from one side of the map to the other by standing in close proximity to it, much like Overwatch’s core mode.

Meanwhile, the defensive team tries to stop it from moving by clearing enemies off it. They can also temporarily disable the robot by shooting it or hitting it with grenades.

It makes for chaotic matches, as all players are focused on a single objective, rather than going after multiple like in Domination.

In the Black Ops 7 version, the robot that teams will be fighting over is a D.A.W.G drone, although, unlike the Scorestreak, it won’t be able to shoot.

The mode was first introduced back in Black Ops 3, before later showing up in 2018’s Black Ops 4. Since then, it has been missing from Treyarch’s mainline games like Black Ops Cold War and Black Ops 6, but it did get added to CoD Mobile in 2023.

Over the years, there have been plenty of calls from fans for it to return, and their wishes are finally being granted when Season 2 launches on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
